Egypt plans to block online betting platforms

Regulation

Ahmed Badawy, head of the House of Representatives’ Communications and Information Technology Committee, said Egypt is coordinating with authorities to shut down online betting platforms operating in the country. Parliament is drafting amendments to cybercrime and telecommunications laws that would block unlicensed platforms and introduce penalties for users; the proposals have not yet been enacted.

Offshore betting operators could face access restrictions and users could face penalties if the proposed amendments pass.
