Dutch ministry says anonymised gambling data limits addiction research

Regulation

The Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security said anonymised player data cannot support some research into gambling addiction, including questions about intervention effectiveness, according to an internal memo from 22 February 2022. The ministry considered a policy rule that would allow pseudonymised data, but the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens advised against it in February 2022, saying the law permitted only anonymised data.

The data rules constrain researchers’ ability to assess the effectiveness of gambling-harm interventions.
