Cottrell's near-$9m Polymarket Trump bet faces funding scrutiny

Regulation · SectorWire deskSource published

Summary

The source of funds for George Cottrell's bet of almost $9m on Donald Trump to win the 2024 election is under increased scrutiny. The Financial Times found that $7m of the funds came from a crypto wallet on the OKX exchange and a further $1.83m from a wallet on ChangeNOW. The bet returned $13.3m, a profit of $4.46m, and Cottrell has not commented.

Why it matters

The case raises questions over the origin of funds and who took the profits on a large prediction-market position.
