In brief

  • Calabria welfare councillor Pasqualina Straface said the region has 14 centres for people with gambling disorders and their families.
  • Ser.D. addiction services operate in all five health authorities, she said.

Pasqualina Straface, the welfare councillor of the Calabria region, commented on a recent analysis of gambling that had been published online. The regional president, Occhiuto, has given her a delegation covering pathological addictions. Straface stated that Calabria has 14 centres to take in people with gambling disorders, as well as their relatives. She added that Calabria allocates about 1.300.000,00 every year to the provincial health authorities for projects against gambling addiction.

According to Straface, the centres are run by Third Sector entities accredited with the regional health service. She said each centre works through a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, social workers, educators, and psychiatric and legal consultants. She said the centres provide semi-residential, residential and outpatient care. Straface said Ser.D. addiction services are present in all five health authorities and offer outpatient diagnosis and treatment.

She said the services follow a regional plan drawn up by the Health Department since 2019. Straface said the funding covers prevention work in schools and specialised centres that people can approach for support. The report says data on the services operating in Calabria are available from each health authority and from the region's Health Department.

More than a dozen Argentine jurisdictions have regulated online gambling, while others are implementing rules or have yet to set a framework, according to the report. It says Santa Fe has two authorised online gambling platforms and four sports betting platforms, while San Juan is developing rules for Provincial Law 2724. A national problem-gambling bill passed the lower house with proposed restrictions on minors, advertising and sponsorships; ALEA president Ida López criticised its effect on provincial powers.

More than a dozen Argentine provinces have regulated online gambling under a decentralised model, with no unified national regulatory framework, according to the report. The report says there is no single national licensing regime and that each province keeps its own authority to legislate, regulate and operate online gambling within its territory.
