Brazil’s Supreme Court admits São Paulo in municipal lottery case

Regulation

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court admitted the state of São Paulo as an amicus curiae in a case challenging municipal lottery rules, in a decision by Justice Nunes Marques on 24 November. São Paulo argues that lottery legislation is an exclusive federal competence, with federal law authorising states and the Federal District to operate lotteries; the case was brought by Solidariedade.

The case may clarify whether municipalities can establish their own lottery and betting systems.
