A federal court in São Paulo has granted Stake Brazil a short reprieve from Brazil's betting ban, allowing the operator to remain active until 25 October 2026, or until another court decision. The company had sought relief until December 2029, when its licence is set to expire. Under the reprieve, authorities may not treat Stake's authorisation as terminated even after the ban takes effect.
Several requirements come with the relief. Stake has to continue checking the identity and age of customers and keep its social responsibility and anti-money laundering safeguards in force. Promotions and bonuses are off the table during this period, withdrawals must remain available, and bets already placed must be paid out. The company said it welcomed the ruling and promised to meet these terms.
According to the report, the operator paid $6 million for its license and put almost $26 million into its Brazilian operations. Its authorisation is administrative in nature and does not guarantee stable regulatory conditions, so it remains unclear how much of that money, if any, it can recover. Recovering the funds would require the company to pursue a different legal route.
Stake is the first operator to take the matter to court, a step described as setting a precedent for other potential reprieves. The reprieve follows Brazil's shutdown of its online gaming industry, which the source says came two years after the market was launched.
