University of Amsterdam researchers publish open-source gambling risk algorithm

Regulation

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam developed an open-source algorithm to identify potentially harmful online gambling behaviour, and the model was made available on 18 August through the Dutch Gambling Authority (KSA), according to the report. It was trained using all bets placed by customers at 13 Dutch online casinos between 30 July 2023 and 30 July 2025. The KSA could use it to compare its risk assessments with those of operators.

The public model gives regulators an independent tool to assess operator systems for identifying gambling risks.
