UK government considers ban on unlicensed gambling sports sponsorships

Regulation

The UK government is considering prohibiting unlicensed gambling operators from sponsoring British sports teams and plans to consult on the issue this spring. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said such sponsorship could draw fans towards sites outside UK regulatory standards; the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport said existing arrangements are not unlawful.

A ban could affect clubs’ sponsorship agreements and operators’ access to British sports advertising.
