Rio police launch third phase of match-fixing investigation

Enforcement & compliance

Rio de Janeiro’s Consumer Protection Police Station launched the third phase of Operation VAR, investigating suspected match-fixing and money laundering linked to sports betting. Police executed search warrants and questioned a player suspected of deliberately receiving a yellow card during the 2026 Carioca Championship to benefit third parties. The investigation began in 2024 after a report from the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation and remains ongoing.

The investigation concerns alleged manipulation of match events used to benefit sports bets.
