New Jersey lawmakers propose 10% surcharge on World Cup betting revenue
New Jersey Assemblyman Michael Venezia introduced bill HB4838 to impose a temporary 10% levy on net revenue from online wagers on 2026 World Cup matches. The proposal covers bets on matches, series and player statistics, with payments due by 10 August 2026 and compliance overseen by the Division of Gaming Enforcement. Lawmakers say the wider package would help cover costs linked to hosting eight tournament games.
If enacted, the levy would change operators’ tax obligations on qualifying World Cup wagers in New Jersey.
