Minas Gerais bars betting adverts on state property as Cruzeiro seeks Mineirão assurances

Regulation

Minas Gerais published Decree 49.279/2026 on 20 August, banning betting-company advertising on state public property, including Mineirão. Governor Mateus Simões told Cruzeiro’s president the club could continue playing at the stadium; the club said it would meet the state’s chief of staff the following week to discuss the measure. Betting adverts remained visible during Cruzeiro’s match on 22 August, with the stadium administration saying those spaces were the club’s responsibility.

The decree affects betting advertising at a state-owned venue and creates compliance questions for clubs and their commercial partners.

Brazilian ministries disagree over Minas Gerais betting-advertising decree

Brazil's Finance and Sports ministries gave the Supreme Federal Court differing views on Minas Gerais' decree restricting betting advertising on state property and at events promoted or supported by the state. Both said a later provisional measure had made the case moot; Finance argued the decree may intrude on federal powers, while Sports defended state administrative autonomy.

They disagree on the merits: Finance argued the decree may intrude on federal legislative powers, while Sports said it can be preserved as an exercise of the state's administrative autonomy.
