On Nov. 1, Michigan had 589,449 active betting accounts, according to a geolocation technology provider. That put Michigan just 0.3% ahead of New York, which had 587,752. Pennsylvania took third place with 570,386.
Across 28 legal US sports betting markets, the nationwide total reached 5.7 million accounts. The three leading states made up about 31% of the national figure. GeoComply published the numbers on Monday within a weekly NFL betting series.
New Jersey and North Carolina each had more than 250,000 active accounts. Ohio, Illinois and Indiana were among the states with between 101,000 and 250,000 active accounts. Puerto Rico logged 6,459, while Wyoming and Vermont each finished below 9,000.
The counts track sportsbook activity, not money wagered, which handle captures. Since one person may hold accounts with several operators, the totals may not map onto unique bettors.
Michigan also ranked first for active sportsbook accounts relative to its population aged 21 and older, at 8.26%. Washington, DC followed at 7.36%, then West Virginia at 7.16%, New Jersey at 7% and Pennsylvania at 5.97%.
