Flávio Bolsonaro criticises Brazil’s betting ban over legal certainty

Regulation

Brazilian senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro criticised President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s measure to prohibit sports betting and online casinos, saying it harmed companies that had invested to operate under authorisations. The measure was issued on 25 September, and industry organisations have petitioned the Supreme Federal Court to suspend it pending a new public hearing. Bolsonaro did not set out a detailed alternative policy or say how he would vote on the measure in Congress.

The dispute concerns whether authorised operators can continue serving Brazil while the provisional measure faces judicial and congressional scrutiny.
