FanDuel said it has carried out more than 58,000 manual responsible gambling reviews over the past year. The company has published this information on its Fast Facts page.
FanDuel states that its monitoring combines machine learning with risk scoring, and that it watches for patterns such as chasing losses. According to FanDuel, account reviews are not automated, and trained professionals carry them out. After a review, FanDuel may suggest gambling education, apply limits to the account, or exclude the player altogether. FanDuel says Kindbridge Behavioral Services is among the partners that let it offer problem gambling resources at no cost.
Cory Fox, who holds the title of senior vice president of public policy and sustainability at FanDuel, briefed the senator and representatives on the company's use of technology and responsible gambling practices. Fox wrote to lawmakers that the Responsible Gaming team proactively watches for indicators such as deposit and withdrawal history, larger wagers, canceled withdrawals, and in-app chat statements pointing to distress or a gambling problem.
Congress is pressing for answers, led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Reps. Paul Tonko and Valerie Foushee. A New York Times article quoted former DraftKings employees who suggested the company might have used technology to single out players inclined to spend more. DraftKings has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that its technology has not disadvantaged players. Regulators are also looking into the issue, as the Massachusetts Gaming Commission is examining how licensees use AI.
