EU advocate general backs refunds for bets lost with unlicensed operators
EU Advocate General Nicholas Emilíou said operators without a required national licence could have to repay customer losses. In a dispute involving a German customer and Tipico, the customer sought refunds for bets placed from 2013 to 2020, when Tipico held a Maltese licence but no German authorisation. The opinion is non-binding; the Court of Justice of the European Union will issue the final ruling.
The opinion could affect operators’ exposure to refund claims for bets accepted without national authorisation.
