BurraPay brings crypto payments to Sahara casino on Las Vegas Strip

Deals & M&A2 min read

In brief

  • BurraPay has deployed its cryptocurrency payment platform at the Sahara resort in Las Vegas.
  • Customers can exchange cryptocurrency for chips or tickets; the NGCB reportedly approved the system.
  • BurraPay plans to go live with several casinos in the next few weeks, a spokeswoman said.

BurraPay put its cryptocurrency payment platform into service at the Sahara resort last month. Customers there can now swap cryptocurrency for chips or tickets to gamble on the casino floor, a first for the Las Vegas Strip. Earlier this year the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) signed off on the system, so the company may operate in the state's regulated gaming industry.

Luke Millanta of BurraPay said "players and operators are ready for a new way to pay." In June, a partnership with Circa Resort & Casino in downtown Las Vegas made BurraPay the first compliant crypto payment provider operating in Nevada, and it handled its first legal sports wager funded with cryptocurrency in the state.

Craig Pleva, general manager of Sahara, said adding cryptocurrency to the payment options gives guests greater flexibility and convenience.

A company spokeswoman told CDC Gaming in an email that BurraPay is in talks with other Nevada casinos and plans to go live with several in the next few weeks. Lauren Coombs said that, since crypto is new to the jurisdictions, the company is "continuing to work deliberately" with each jurisdiction and gaming commission. Coombs added that regulators are also being worked with so that all of their regulatory concerns are addressed. Six states currently have BurraPay approved or authorized for use. Discussions are under way, she said, with a number of tribal gaming commissions on top of commercial casino jurisdictions.
