Brazilian government seeks closure of 13,241 online betting sites
Brazil’s government has sought the closure of 13,241 online betting sites made illegal under a law that took effect on 25 September, according to reports. Finance Minister Dario Durigan said the measure followed estimates that R$600m to R$650m a day had been leaving household accounts for betting. Industry companies have asked the Supreme Court to overturn the measure and restore previous authorisations, arguing it could drive consumers to illegal platforms.
Operators face the loss of access to affected users, while industry companies are challenging the measure in court.
