ABFS regulatory director challenges methods in Brazil betting-debt studies

Regulation

ABFS regulatory director Heloísa Diniz questioned whether studies linking betting to household debt and defaults establish causation. She argued that the cited analysis lacked a control group and excluded variables such as unemployment, credit and inflation from its regressions. The article also contrasted a claimed March 2026 monthly betting-spend estimate above R$30bn with SPA figures of about R$37bn in sector GGR for all of 2025.

Regulators and investors should consider the cited methodological gaps when evaluating claims about betting and household debt.
